Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Treatment

Understanding OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing the distress caused by these thoughts. OCD can significantly impact daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life.

My Approach to Treating OCD

I specialize in treating OCD using two evidence-based approaches: Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) or Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT).

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is a well-established and highly effective form of cognitive-behavioral therapy for OCD. It involves:

  • Exposure: Gradually and systematically exposing clients to feared situations or thoughts without engaging in compulsive behaviors.

  • Response Prevention: Helping clients resist the urge to perform compulsions in response to their obsessions.

Through ERP, clients learn to tolerate anxiety and uncertainty, ultimately reducing the frequency and intensity of their obsessions and compulsions.

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)

I-CBT is an approach that focuses on the way individuals with OCD misinterpret their thoughts and doubts. This therapy aims to:

  • Challenge Inference-Based Reasoning: Addressing the faulty logic and assumptions that lead to obsessive thoughts.

  • Strengthen Rational Thinking: Helping clients develop a more realistic and evidence-based way of interpreting their thoughts and experiences.

I-CBT provides clients with tools to reduce the power and impact of their obsessions by changing their thinking patterns.

Treatment for Adults and Adolescents

I am dedicated to providing compassionate and effective care for both adults and adolescents struggling with OCD. I recognize that the developmental stage and individual circumstances of each client play a crucial role in the treatment process. I am experienced in adapting ERP and I-CBT techniques to meet the specific needs of different age groups, ensuring that every client receives the most appropriate and effective care.
